Why is excess sugar ageing you?

If you’re anything like me, the stress of life with COVID-19 is meaning chocolate consumption is up in my household but could your sugar habits be causing damage to your skin?

We know that too much sugar isn’t great but what you consume also impacts skin health. There are two key things that sugar does to your skin. Firstly it has been linked to inflammation which can aggravate skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis and secondly when we consume excess sugar it has a negative effect on our skins collagen - the protein responsible for giving our skin it’s ‘bounce’. When we consume excess sugar it causes a reaction called Glycation, an enzymatic reaction between sugar and collagen which compromises the skins collagen leading to loss of skins elasticity, hello wrinkles!
